Most learners know the movements of salah. This lesson asks what each one means. Lesson 4 from Y9 salah series moves through salah posture by posture, from preparation before the first takbir to standing up from ruku’, linking every physical act to the state of the heart that should accompany it.

This lesson covers,

Preparation before salah is covered as a spiritual act, including the intention behind wudu, dressing well for worship, facing the qiblah, and mentally reminding yourself of who you are about to address, before a single word of salah is spoken.

The takbir and qiyam are explained in depth: raising the hands as an act of surrender and pushing the dunya aside, Allahu Akbar as a statement of Allah’s greatness beyond all things, and standing with lowered gaze and right hand over left in a posture of devoted humility, grounded in Surah al-Baqarah (2:238).

The opening duʿa, isti’adhah, and basmalah are treated as three distinct spiritual acts: greeting and praising Allah, seeking protection from the one who wants to destroy the prayer, and opening with Bismillah as an act of seeking help and blessing from Allah alone.

Qur’an recitation and ruku’ are connected: reciting calmly with tajwid, hearing your own voice, pausing to reflect on what Allah is saying in Surah al-Fatihah, then moving into ruku’ as a strong symbol of submission, praising and glorifying Allah while humbling both the body and the heart simultaneously.

Standing up from ruku’ is presented through the adhkar of Sahih al-Bukhari, including the hadith of Rifaʿah ibn Rafiʿ in which the Prophet ﷺ described thirty-something angels racing to be first to record a companion’s words of praise, giving learners a reason to say these words with full attention.

A lesson on the ṣalāh and khushūʿ of our beloved Prophet ﷺ, why we struggle with khushūʿ, and the healing power of ṣalāh.

The ṣalāh of our beloved Prophet ﷺ: The lesson draws on accounts from ʿĀʾishah رضي الله عنها and the Hadith of Hudhayfah رضي الله عنه to describe how the Prophet ﷺ prayed his weeping, his prolonged standing after rukūʿ, his lowered head, and the account of ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib رضي الله عنه of finding him praying and crying under a tree until the morning of Badr.

Why we lack khushūʿ: Four causes are examined: weak īmān, love of the dunyā and materialism, sins, and hedonism and apathy. Ibn Taymiyyah رحمه الله is quoted: if you find no sweetness or joy in a deed, doubt its sincerity, for Allah is ash-Shakūr.

Adhkār within ṣalāh: Two adhkār are introduced with their sources the istiftāḥ from Muslim, with the account of twelve angels competing to carry it up, and the duʿa between the two sajdahs from Abū Dāwūd asking Allah for forgiveness, mercy, wellbeing, guidance, and sustenance.

Ṣalāh and mental health: Qur’an 2:45–46 is quoted on seeking help through patience and ṣalāh, and the prophetic phrase “grant us rest through ṣalāh” is introduced. The lesson asks learners to write the verse and reflect on what it means for their own relationship with ṣalāh.

Describing the Prophet’s ﷺ ṣalāh: As a closing reflection, learners are asked to imagine they witnessed the Prophet ﷺ pray as a child and are now describing that ṣalāh to their grandchildren drawing together everything covered in the lesson into a single, personal response.
