<p>A lesson on five practical steps outside ṣalāh for developing khushūʿ, covering maʿrifah, sins, sunnah prayers, and eliminating distractions.</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Attaining the maʿrifah of Allah:</strong> The lesson opens by sorting the Names of Allah into two categories those inspiring awe and those inspiring love before establishing that deeper knowledge of Allah is the foundation of khushūʿ. Learners consider what maʿrifah is and how it is built.</li>



<li><strong>The magnitude of ṣalāh and the impact of sins:</strong> The Hadith in Bukhārī on ʿUthmān رضي الله عنه states that whoever performs wuḍūʾ as the Prophet ﷺ did and prays two rakʿah without letting his thoughts wander, Allah will forgive all his previous sins. Qur&#8217;an 83:14 follows on sins leaving a covering over the heart, and the story of al-Rabīʿ b. Khuthaym illustrates the connection between ṣalāh and nūr.</li>



<li><strong>Safeguarding the eyes, tongue, stomach, and heart:</strong> The lesson asks how sins through each of these channels affect khushūʿ, and invites learners to think practically about how to protect them.</li>



<li><strong>Punctuality with sunnah prayers:</strong> Sunnah prayers are compared to stretching before exercise preparation before the farḍ, and compensation for their deficiencies. The rawātib are listed with their rewards, and the Hadith on ṣalāh being the first deed a servant is held accountable for on the Day of Judgement is introduced to anchor the discussion.</li>



<li><strong>Eliminating distractions:</strong> Ibn Kathīr is quoted on khushūʿ belonging only to the one who empties his heart entirely for ṣalāh and prioritises it over everything else. Learners identify their own distractions and how to address them, and the istiʿādhah from Aḥmad seeking protection from Shayṭān&#8217;s incitement to madness, pride, and reprehensible poetry is added to the adhkār bank.</li>

<p>What do we place our hope in Allah for? This lesson, &#8220;<em>Hoping in Allah&#8221;</em>  takes rajāʾ hope in Allah as its subject: what it is, what it demands of a believer, and how it differs from the kind of hope that asks for mercy without any intention to change.</p>



<p>The session draws heavily on Ibn al-Qayyim, quoted twice once on the necessity of hope for anyone journeying towards Allah, and again on the link between hope and knowledge of Allah&#8217;s Names and Attributes. The distinction between rajāʾ and al-tamannī (using Allah&#8217;s mercy as permission to continue in sin) is central to the session. Qur&#8217;an 18:110 is the basis for what Ibn al-Qayyim calls &#8220;the essence of īmān,&#8221; and the story of Yaʿqūb عليه السلام connects hope with faith under hardship. The session also addresses how hope and fear sit alongside each other across different stages of life, drawing on the well-known statement of ʿUmar رضي الله عنه, and closes with a duʿa from Abū Dāwūd asking Allah not to entrust the servant to himself for even the blink of an eye.</p>



<p>This session covers:</p>

<li><strong>The definition and necessity of rajāʾ:</strong> Hope in Allah is defined as full awareness of His mercy combined with confidence in His generosity. Ibn al-Qayyim is quoted on why a believer cannot afford to lose hope at any point on their journey between sins, shortcomings, deeds, and the desire for closeness to Allah.</li>



<li><strong>Real hope vs deluded hope:</strong> Learners distinguish between rajāʾ, which is paired with action, and al-tamannī, which uses Allah&#8217;s mercy as a reason to continue in sin. Learners are asked to consider what they recognise in themselves.</li>



<li><strong>Ḥusn al-Ẓann Billāh:</strong> The Hadith in Bukhārī &#8220;I am as My servant thinks of Me&#8221; is introduced alongside a comparison of two learners, one who lacks hope and one who holds it, to prompt reflection on how hope shapes everyday life.</li>



<li><strong>Balancing hope and fear:</strong> The session examines when each quality is more needed, across good times, hardship, and different stages of life. The statement of ʿUmar رضي الله عنه on being the one person in either scenario is quoted in full.</li>



<li><strong>Increasing hope through knowledge of Allah:</strong> Five areas for reflection are offered blessings, rewards, Allah&#8217;s love and kindness, His Names, and the Qur&#8217;an supported by Qur&#8217;an 18:110 and a duʿa from Abū Dāwūd.</li>

<p>What does winter mean for a believer? This lesson, <em>&#8220;Winter: The Believer&#8217;s Season</em>&#8220;,  moves through five focused themes, drawing on Hadith from Bukhārī and Tirmidhī, Qur&#8217;an Surah As-Sajdah verse 16–17, and reflections from the early Muslims, to help learners see the season as one with its own spiritual rhythm.</p>



<p>The lesson opens with an honest question about the winter blues before settling into its five points. Fasting in winter is introduced through a Hadith in Tirmidhī. The night prayer receives the most attention: Qur&#8217;an As-Sajdah verse 16–17 is quoted in full, Abū Sulaymān al-Dārānī speaks to the joy of qiyām al-layl, and learners are given practical tips for waking for tahajjud. The Hadith in Bukhārī on Hell-fire breathing out in summer and winter anchors the section on gratitude. The session closes with accepted times for duʿa and the specific duʿas for rain, thunder, and wind. Learners are asked to reflect and respond throughout, not simply to listen.</p>

<li><strong>Winter as a fasting opportunity:</strong> The session cites the Hadith in Tirmidhī in which our beloved Prophet ﷺ described fasting in winter as easy, and encourages learners to use the season for qaḍā fasts and voluntary days such as Mondays and Thursdays.</li>



<li><strong>The night prayer and its reward:</strong> Learners engage with tahajjud through Qur&#8217;an 32:16–17, a Hadith in Tirmidhī on qiyām al-layl, and the personal reflection of Abū Sulaymān al-Dārānī. Practical advice on waking for tahajjud is included.</li>



<li><strong>Hell-fire as a reminder:</strong> The Hadith in Bukhārī is presented in which Hell-fire complained to Allah and was permitted to breathe out, with the extreme heat of summer and bitter cold of winter given as the result.</li>



<li><strong>Gratitude and concern for others:</strong> Learners list specific blessings and discuss how to thank Allah. The session includes the account of Saʿīd al-Kalbī, who wept during a cold night out of compassion for the poor of the Ummah.</li>



<li><strong>Duʿas for winter conditions:</strong> The session covers accepted times for duʿa, citing a Hadith in Ḥākim, and teaches the specific duʿas for rain, thunder, and wind, with their Arabic text.</li>
