How did such an extraordinary transformation happen within a single generation? What changed impoverished desert Bedouins into men and women who carried a message that altered the course of history?

The answer lies in a miracle that still exists today: the Qur’ān.

Shaykh Muḥammad al-Ghazālī (raḥimahullāh) explained that the Qur’ān fundamentally reshaped the Arabs. By opening their hearts to its beauty, they became a unified people who consulted with each other, rejected tyranny, and upheld justice. Despite how entrenched their regressive practices were, the Qur’ān compelled them to abolish inequality, reject racism, and do away with arrogance. 

Such was the transformation that a Bedouin like Ribʿī b. ʿĀmir (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhu) could stand dignified before a Persian commander and declare:

“We have come to take people from the worship of servants to the worship of Allah alone; from the narrowness of this world to the vastness of this world and the Hereafter; and from the injustice of other ways of life to the justice of Islam.”

The Three Pillars of Change

Shaykh Majdī Hilālī explains that this transformation rested on three pillars of Quranic tarbiyah:

1. The Qur’ān
2. The murabbī (the nurturer)
3. The environment

1. The Qur’an: The Manual for Transformation

The Qur’ān was the illuminating manual through which the Prophet ﷺ nurtured the finest generation, shaping hearts filled with strong īmān, deep love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, and iḥsān (excellence).

This transformation, however, did not happen overnight. 

The Qur’ān was revealed gradually over 23 years, allowing the Companions to understand, internalise, and embody its guidance.

The gradual revelation of the Qur’ān was central to its transformative power. As verses descended in direct response to real events unfolding around them, the Companions were able to internalise the practical lessons immediately. Battles such as Badr, Uḥud, and Aḥzāb, alongside the everyday challenges of community life, became classrooms in which revelation guided decisions, nurtured conviction, and strengthened īmān. 

The Qur’ān was never an abstract text. It spoke directly into lived reality.

Dr Fārid al-Anṣārī (raḥimahullāh) explained that the Qur’ān served as a direct gateway to the Divine. For those who first heard it from the Prophet ﷺ, there was no doubt that Allah was addressing them personally and, as a result, every verse settled deeply within their hearts and was fully reflected in their actions.

When Abū Bakr and ʿUmar (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhumā) visited Umm Ayman (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhā) after the demise of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, she wept. When they asked her, “What makes you weep? What is with Allah is better for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ!” she replied, “I am not weeping because I do not know that what is with Allah is better for His Messenger ﷺ. Rather, I weep because the revelation has been cut off from the heavens.” Her words moved them to tears, and they wept alongside her (Muslim).

Their relationship with the Qur’ān, however, extended far beyond emotion. It shaped the very method by which they learned it and lived its teachings. 

Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī said: “Those who used to teach us the Qur’ān — such as ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān and ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd — told us that when they learned ten verses from the Prophet ﷺ, they would not move on until they had understood the knowledge and actions contained within them. So we learned the Qur’ān, knowledge, and action together.”

2. The Murabbi: Rasulullah ﷺ as a Nurturer

Alongside the miracle of the Qur’ān, came the miracle of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Allah ﷻ decreed that the Qur’ān’s transformative power would be transmitted through a guide: a murabbī who nurtures hearts and minds. Allah ﷻ says, 

“He it is Who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger from among themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom, whereas before they had been in manifest error” (62:2).

The Prophet ﷺ, the best teacher humanity has known, lived among the Companions and connected their hearts to the Qur’ān. He instilled in his Companions a detachment from this world, purified their hearts, and corrected their understanding. He embodied the Qur’ān he conveyed and, in doing so, he nurtured a generation that carried this dīn across the world.

Imām al-Qarrāfī succinctly remarked that if the Prophet ﷺ had been given no miracle besides his Companions, they alone would be sufficient proof of his prophethood. 

3. The Environment: Nurturing Hearts in Community

Alongside the Qur’ān and the murabbī, the Companions were shaped by the environment in which they were nurtured. In Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ gathered the believers in Dār al-Arqam, away from competing influences, where they learned together and formed the bonds of brotherhood that would later spread from East to West.

There, the curriculum was the Qur’ān itself: fresh revelation heard directly from the Messenger ﷺ, settling into hearts and reshaping souls.

The Prophet ﷺ ensured that the Qur’ān alone formed the foundation of education, unmixed with other influences. Its verses transformed their values, emotions, conduct, and aspirations. Each believer was rebuilt inwardly before being sent out to transform the world around them.

After the hijrah, this nurturing environment expanded to encompass the masjid and wider community of Madinah. Throughout this period, the Qur’ān remained the focal point, taught by the Prophet ﷺ for the transformation of the Muhājirīn and Anṣār.

In fact, the scholars say that Madinah was ‘conquered’ through the Qur’ān. Before the Prophet ﷺ migrated, he sent Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhu) to Madinah with portions of the Qur’ān. Going from house to house, he called people to Islam by reciting the Qur’ān to them. Through the verses, the Anṣār’s hearts softened until Islam entered nearly every household in Madinah. 

This happened because the Companions received the Qur’ān with sincerity, humility, and a readiness to act. They tasted its sweetness, recognised its power to change their hearts, and so they devoted themselves to it wholeheartedly. In return, the Qur’ān reshaped their hearts, guided their actions, and made them flag-bearers of Islam.

Moving Forward

Our task today is not to search for a new formula for revival. The blueprint already exists. If we aspire to nurture a generation guided by revelation and grounded in reality who carry forward the legacy of the Prophet ﷺ, we must restore the three pillars that formed the first generation: the Qur’ān as the curriculum, the murabbī as the nurturer, and a Qur’ān-centred environment in which īmān and character can flourish.

The Qur‘ān was the manual that the Prophet ﷺ  used to raise and nurture the best of generations — a generation characterised by unwavering imān, a deep love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ  and the pursuit of iḥsān. The Qur’ān transformed their hearts, minds, characters and their entire lives.

This did not happen overnight. In fact, the Qur‘ān was revealed over a period of 23 years to allow the companions to understand, internalise and shape their character according to it. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī  said: “Those who used to teach us the Qur‘ān — such as ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān and ʿAbdullah b. Masʿūd (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhum) etc — told us that when they learned ten verses from the Prophet ﷺ, they would not move on from them until they had learned the knowledge and actions contained within them.”

They said: “So we learned the Qur‘ān, knowledge, and action all together.”

Is Memorisation Enough?

Sometimes, we only focus on making our children memorise the Qur‘ān or perfect their tajwīd, but we neglect to inspire and teach them the message and the meanings of the Qur‘ān. Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (raḥimahullāh) said, “Certainly, slaves and children recite the Qur‘ān and they have no knowledge of its meaning. They memorised its letters but neglected its commands, to the extent that one of them will say, “By Allah, I have recited the entire Qur‘ān without missing out on any letter.” By Allah, he has missed out on all of it! For there is no effect of the Qur‘ān on his character and actions. By Allah, it is not about memorising its letters, and then neglecting its commands!”

The number of companions who memorised the Qur‘ān was not high in number, yet they all lived and breathed the Qur‘ān. Their primary concern was to put into practice what they had learned. ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhu) said, “Memorising the words of the Qur‘ān is difficult for us, but acting upon it is easy for us. As for those who come after us, memorising the Qur‘ān will be easy for them, but acting upon it will be difficult for them.”
