Within just a few decades after the advent of the final Prophet sent to mankind ﷺ, the world witnessed one of history’s most remarkable transformations. A people once divided by tribal loyalties, trapped in cycles of violence, and largely unknown beyond the Arabian Peninsula became the architects of a civilisation that reshaped the world. They defeated the mighty Persian and Roman Empires, established justice across vast lands, and became leaders in knowledge and civilisation.

How did such an extraordinary transformation happen within a single generation? What changed impoverished desert Bedouins into men and women who carried a message that altered the course of history?

The answer lies in a miracle that still exists today: the Qur’ān.

Shaykh Muḥammad al-Ghazālī (raḥimahullāh) explained that the Qur’ān fundamentally reshaped the Arabs. By opening their hearts to its beauty, they became a unified people who consulted with each other, rejected tyranny, and upheld justice. Despite how entrenched their regressive practices were, the Qur’ān compelled them to abolish inequality, reject racism, and do away with arrogance.

Such was the transformation that a Bedouin like Ribʿī b. ʿĀmir (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhu) could stand dignified before a Persian commander and declare:

“We have come to take people from the worship of servants to the worship of Allah alone; from the narrowness of this world to the vastness of this world and the Hereafter; and from the injustice of other ways of life to the justice of Islam.”

The Three Pillars of Change

Shaykh Majdī Hilālī explains that this transformation rested on three pillars of Quranic tarbiyah:

The Qur’ān

The murabbī (the nurturer)

The environment

1. The Qur’an: The Manual for Transformation

The Qur’ān was the illuminating manual through which the Prophet ﷺ nurtured the finest generation, shaping hearts filled with strong īmān, deep love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, and iḥsān (excellence).

This transformation, however, did not happen overnight.

The Qur’ān was revealed gradually over 23 years, allowing the Companions to understand, internalise, and embody its guidance.

The gradual revelation of the Qur’ān was central to its transformative power. As verses descended in direct response to real events unfolding around them, the Companions were able to internalise the practical lessons immediately. Battles such as Badr, Uḥud, and Aḥzāb, alongside the everyday challenges of community life, became classrooms in which revelation guided decisions, nurtured conviction, and strengthened īmān.

The Qur’ān was never an abstract text. It spoke directly into lived reality.

Dr Fārid al-Anṣārī (raḥimahullāh) explained that the Qur’ān served as a direct gateway to the Divine. For those who first heard it from the Prophet ﷺ, there was no doubt that Allah was addressing them personally and, as a result, every verse settled deeply within their hearts and was fully reflected in their actions.

When Abū Bakr and ʿUmar (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhumā) visited Umm Ayman (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhā) after the demise of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, she wept. When they asked her, “What makes you weep? What is with Allah is better for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ!” she replied, “I am not weeping because I do not know that what is with Allah is better for His Messenger ﷺ. Rather, I weep because the revelation has been cut off from the heavens.” Her words moved them to tears, and they wept alongside her (Muslim).

Their relationship with the Qur’ān, however, extended far beyond emotion. It shaped the very method by which they learned it and lived its teachings.

Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī said: “Those who used to teach us the Qur’ān — such as ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān and ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd — told us that when they learned ten verses from the Prophet ﷺ, they would not move on until they had understood the knowledge and actions contained within them. So we learned the Qur’ān, knowledge, and action together.”

2. The Murabbi: Rasulullah ﷺ as a Nurturer

Alongside the miracle of the Qur’ān, came the miracle of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Allah ﷻ decreed that the Qur’ān’s transformative power would be transmitted through a guide: a murabbī who nurtures hearts and minds. Allah ﷻ says,

“He it is Who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger from among themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom, whereas before they had been in manifest error” (62:2).

The Prophet ﷺ, the best teacher humanity has known, lived among the Companions and connected their hearts to the Qur’ān. He instilled in his Companions a detachment from this world, purified their hearts, and corrected their understanding. He embodied the Qur’ān he conveyed and, in doing so, he nurtured a generation that carried this dīn across the world.

Imām al-Qarrāfī succinctly remarked that if the Prophet ﷺ had been given no miracle besides his Companions, they alone would be sufficient proof of his prophethood.

3. The Environment: Nurturing Hearts in Community

Alongside the Qur’ān and the murabbī, the Companions were shaped by the environment in which they were nurtured. In Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ gathered the believers in Dār al-Arqam, away from competing influences, where they learned together and formed the bonds of brotherhood that would later spread from East to West.

There, the curriculum was the Qur’ān itself: fresh revelation heard directly from the Messenger ﷺ, settling into hearts and reshaping souls.

The Prophet ﷺ ensured that the Qur’ān alone formed the foundation of education, unmixed with other influences. Its verses transformed their values, emotions, conduct, and aspirations. Each believer was rebuilt inwardly before being sent out to transform the world around them.

After the hijrah, this nurturing environment expanded to encompass the masjid and wider community of Madinah. Throughout this period, the Qur’ān remained the focal point, taught by the Prophet ﷺ for the transformation of the Muhājirīn and Anṣār.

In fact, the scholars say that Madinah was ‘conquered’ through the Qur’ān. Before the Prophet ﷺ migrated, he sent Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhu) to Madinah with portions of the Qur’ān. Going from house to house, he called people to Islam by reciting the Qur’ān to them. Through the verses, the Anṣār’s hearts softened until Islam entered nearly every household in Madinah.

This happened because the Companions received the Qur’ān with sincerity, humility, and a readiness to act. They tasted its sweetness, recognised its power to change their hearts, and so they devoted themselves to it wholeheartedly. In return, the Qur’ān reshaped their hearts, guided their actions, and made them flag-bearers of Islam.

Moving Forward

Our task today is not to search for a new formula for revival. The blueprint already exists. If we aspire to nurture a generation guided by revelation and grounded in reality who carry forward the legacy of the Prophet ﷺ, we must restore the three pillars that formed the first generation: the Qur’ān as the curriculum, the murabbī as the nurturer, and a Qur’ān-centred environment in which īmān and character can flourish.

Reflect

How can we help our students experience the Qur’ān as living, transformative guidance, rather than simply a text to be recited or memorised?

As educators, are we merely instructors, or are we true murabbīs who nurture īmān, character, and action through the Qur’ān?

Does our educational environment cultivate īmān, brotherhood, and righteous character, as Dār al-Arqam and Madīnah did? If not, what practical steps can we take to build such an environment today?

The news cycle in recent years will have left a believer aghast at the unending massacres, killings and atrocities inflicted upon this Ummah. Each calamity brings frustration, followed by a cycle of protests, khutbahs, articles, and lamentable discussions.

Important as these responses are, they are not sufficient on their own. Had they been enough, the Ummah would not remain trapped in recurring cycles of oppression. These repeated crises point to a deeper issue that requires long-term vision and strategic reform.

The Gradual Journey of Tarbiyah and Reform

The Qur’ān teaches us that true reform and victory is not achieved through a single effort or emotional reaction. It is a long and gradual journey requiring the preparation of ourselves and the next generation.

History repeatedly shows that victory is never a sudden miracle or a stroke of luck, but the result of a long spiritual, intellectual, and social preparation. Even the greatest moments of triumph were preceded by years, often decades, of inner reform i.e. tarbiyah (the nurturing of individuals). A concentrated effort must be directed toward this noble goal. Without it, the Ummah remains stagnant, trapped in cycles of grief and reaction.

With each new wound, our cries and pleas rise to Allah, our supplications intensify, and reminders echo from the pulpits calling for repentance and change. But once we’re out of the eye of the storm, the wound becomes part of the Ummah’s body and people grow accustomed to it until another calamity arrives.

True transformation begins with the revival of īmān within society: God-consciousness, compassion, modesty, cooperation in righteousness, selflessness, steadfast ṣabr, enjoining good, forbidding wrong, tawakkul, and a sense of responsibility toward the Ummah and humanity. At the same time, destructive traits such as self-admiration, selfishness, moral corruption, and attachment to worldly desires and prioritising nationalism, ethnicity, family loyalties, or political movements over the shared identity of the Ummah must be eliminated. These are the deeper causes of defeat, weakening the Ummah from within.

This transformation can only be achieved through sustained tarbiyah, carried out by those striving for Islam within their spheres of influence, preparing both themselves and the next generation for this long and gradual path of reform.

Comprehensive Tarbiyah

No matter how many lessons are delivered or articles written, they will not produce lasting benefit unless embedded within a comprehensive system of tarbiyah: a structured framework of development and reform. Such a system nurtures righteous believers who reform themselves and uplift others. Upon them rests the foundation of a righteous family, and upon that, a righteous society.

Thus, the starting point for lifting the calamities upon the Ummah lies in inner reform. Allah ﷻ says:

“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves” (13:11).

Unless this transformation occurs, trials will continue to descend. They are not lifted by duʿāʾ alone, nor by mere aid to the afflicted, despite their importance. Real transformation demands effort, sacrifice, and commitment.

The Prophetic Path of Tarbiyah

The transformation of the Ummah requires a sound and holistic tarbiyah of its people. True tarbiyah demands consistency in living Islām within an environment of companionship and nurturing: one that revives the spirit, refines understanding, directs effort, and inspires aspiration.

This was precisely the method of our beloved Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ in building the Ummah. Reflect on Allah’s words to him:

“Keep yourself patient with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His Face; and let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornment of worldly life…” (18:28).

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ nurtured his Companions, constantly guiding and developing them, both in Makkah and Madīnah. In Makkah, he gathered with them regularly in the house of al-Arqam ibn Abī al-Arqam near al-Ṣafā. In Madinah, his tarbiyah continued through the masjid and through his constant presence among them. Allah ﷻ describes this mission: “It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom.” (62:2).

Learning From the Past

Our history provides many examples of a defeated Ummah rising again, stronger than before. We must look to these moments for guidance and seek to understand and relive the means through which Allah granted victory.

Ṣalāḥuddīn’s liberation of al-Quds is often remembered as a military triumph, but it was preceded by decades of spiritual and intellectual preparation. Most of his life was not spent on the battlefield, but on healing internal divisions, restoring unity, resolving divisions, and rebuilding a shared sense of purpose.

The road to Jerusalem was not only paved with battles against external enemies, but also with steadfastness in the face of betrayal and internal opposition. Yet Ṣalāḥuddīn (raḥimahullāh) understood that unity upon truth was a prerequisite for victory.

Before him, figures such as Nūruddīn Zengī revived religious life, established institutions of learning, and cultivated unity and purpose within society. Scholars like al-Ghazālī and al-Jīlānī emphasised sincerity, purification of the heart, and the alignment of knowledge with action. Thus, Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn inherited not just an army, but a generation grounded in both spiritual and physical strength.

When people rose above petty disputes, prioritised the Hereafter over worldly gain, and united upon the truth of “Lā ilāha illa Allāh” in word and action, the extraordinary unfolded. In just ninety days, strongholds of oppression that had lasted ninety years began to collapse.

Similarly, the scattered Berber tribes of the Sahara, divided by internal rivalries and weakened faith, underwent transformational tarbiyah under the guidance of ʿAbdullah ibn Yasin. With a focus on īmān and character, these tribes were united into the Murābiṭūn, who later ruled large parts of North Africa.

A Mirror for Our Time

Today, we face the same reality. Many wait for a leader to rise and transform the Ummah, yet we have not prepared ourselves for the weight of that path. The issue is not a lack of numbers or resources, but a lack of sincerity, sacrifice, and unity upon the truth.

When hearts become consumed with internal conflicts, divisions, and worldly pursuits, the Ummah loses sight of its mission.

Our history teaches us that however bleak the condition of the Ummah may seem, it is neither unique nor irredeemable. Through a sustained and committed return to tarbiyah, the Ummah can rise once again. The question is not whether victory will come, but whether we are prepared to become the generation that builds rather than destroys, unites rather than divides, and lives by “Lā ilāha illa Allāh” in truth and action, so that the promise of Allah may be realised.

Reflect

What intentions do you have when teaching your students and children? How do you hope they will grow into the next generation of strong believers and changemakers?

The Prophet ﷺ nurtured his Companions through companionship, guidance, and consistent engagement.

In the previous post, we discussed some limitations of our educational institutions. In the next few posts, we will discuss some possible solutions inshaAllah.

For many young people (and even some adults) Islam is mainly a rule-based religion. Everything is about ḥalāl and ḥarām — and mainly ḥarām!

But before young people will willingly stay away from ḥarām, īmān needs to be instilled in their hearts. They need to know who Allah is in order to want to obey Him.

Īmān is the core of our dīn. Without it, everything collapses. It is the first thing we must learn about and it is the first thing we have to nurture in our children and youth.

Jundub b. ʿAbdillāh (raḍiy Allāhu ʿanhu) said, “We were with the Prophet ﷺ and we were young men, nearing puberty. We learnt īmān before we learnt Qur’ān. Then we learnt Qur’ān, and increased our īmān through it” (Ibn Mājah).

We have to strengthen īmān in our hearts. We have to make our hearts attached to Allah, so that we always turn to Him, be in awe of Him, have hope in Him, put our trust in Him, and love Him like no other.

The Sahabah & Alcohol

ʿĀ’ishah (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhuā) said, “Indeed the first verses to be revealed were from the shorter chapters at the end of the Qur’ān which contain the mention of Paradise and Hellfire. When the people were firmly established upon Islam, the verses of ḥalāl and ḥarām were revealed.

If the first verse to be revealed was ‘do not drink wine,’ they would have said, ‘we will never stop drinking wine.’ And if the first verse to be revealed was ‘do not commit adultery,’ they would have said, ‘we will never stop committing adultery’” (Bukhārī).

Here, ʿĀ’ishah (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhuā) is talking about the Ṣaḥābah: the best generation. Today, we are even more in need of this. It is vital that before we teach the dos and don’ts of Islam, we instil in our children the knowledge, love, and reverence of Allah (subḥānahū wa taʿālā).

Once they know the Command Giver, the commands will become easy to follow. We learn this from the sīrah and the Qur‘ān itself. During the 13 years in Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ instilled īmān in the hearts of the Companions (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhuum) focusing on: (1) the Oneness of Allah (2) Prophethood (3) Hereafter. Very few legal rulings were revealed, and it wasn’t until the Madinan period, more than 13 years after the first revelation, that fasting was obligated, intoxicants were prohibited, and other rulings regarding dress, financial dealings and social conduct were revealed.

Nurture Iman Through the Qur’an

As educators, we have to have a clear collective strategy within our institutions on how we are going to nurture the īmān of learners. Developing īmān is the most important form of tarbiyah (holistic training and development of the individual), and takes precedence over other forms of development. Nurturing īmān should be a primary goal of learning the Qur’ān and take priority over the quantity of verses memorised, in line with the Prophetic methodology.

Tip: Prepare a step-by-step plan of how you will nurture īmān in learners’ hearts and how you will help them to taste the sweetness of īmān. Hold staff discussions, student focus groups; and constantly review and evaluate your plan.

Download free Iman & Tazkiyah books and resources designed to nurture īmān in young hearts.

Across the world, there are a multitude of madrasahs, maktabs and supplementary Islamic schools which are providing our children with Islamic education. Many of our children attend these institutions for at least two hours on the weekdays, for at least six years.

As educators, we have a responsibility and a golden opportunity to nurture their īmān, akhlāq, spirituality and well-being during this period. If we think strategically about our vision for the learners under our care, and utilise this time in achieving that vision, we will bi’idhnillah develop individuals who are the hope and the future of the Ummah: deep-rooted in their faith and prepared to establish the dīn of Allah on His earth.

This post will explore some of the current limitations of Islamic education. In subsequent posts, we will delve into practical solutions to these challenges.

Current Limitations

The following are some issues our educational institutions struggle with:

Learners are not taught enough about the beauty of din.

There is too much focus on the ‘outer’ aspects of the dīn at the expense of the inner aspects i.e. insufficient focus on nurturing īmān and spirituality.

Learners are not given ample opportunities to experience the sweetness of iman.

The curriculum is not Allah-centred. ʿAqīdah courses/sections in textbooks are dry. Too much time in ʿAqīdah lessons is spent wrangling over theological issues, when that time can be spent cultivating a deep relationship with Allah and His Messenger ﷺ.

Learners are not equipped to deal with modern challenges, and lack the confidence to answer questions which may challenge their faith as they grow up.

There have been huge improvements in teaching the recitation of the Qur’ān and its memorisation. However, there is insufficient emphasis on learning the meanings of the Qur’ān, reflecting on it (tadabbur), and seeking guidance through it.

Inadequate preparation by the teachers, resulting in dull and uninspiring lessons.

There is insufficient focus on nurturing an Islamic worldview and an akhirah-centric mindset in learners. Learners are not empowered to recognise and critique secular and unIslamic paradigms that they encounter daily.

There is inadequate educational provision for teenagers, particularly in their later years, when they are confronted with a surge of desires (shahawāt) and doubts (shubuhāt).

Some Islamic Studies/Qur’ān educators ‘represent’ the dīn, but their conduct and akhlāq contradict the dīn, turning hearts away from Islam.

In the upcoming posts, we will inshaAlllah explore some possible solutions to the aforementioned issues.

The Qur‘ān is the eternal book of guidance. It is a light which illuminates the path of truth amidst the darknesses of falsehood. The Qur‘ān contains legal rulings for a human to live on Allah’s earth, as His subservient slaves. It is a book of blessings and eternal wisdom; a warner and a giver of good news. It is a cure for every disease – be it spiritual or physical.

The Qur‘ān was the manual that the Prophet ﷺ used to raise and nurture the best of generations — a generation characterised by unwavering imān, a deep love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ and the pursuit of iḥsān. The Qur’ān transformed their hearts, minds, characters and their entire lives.

This did not happen overnight. In fact, the Qur‘ān was revealed over a period of 23 years to allow the companions to understand, internalise and shape their character according to it. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī said: “Those who used to teach us the Qur‘ān — such as ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān and ʿAbdullah b. Masʿūd (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhum) etc — told us that when they learned ten verses from the Prophet ﷺ, they would not move on from them until they had learned the knowledge and actions contained within them.”

They said: “So we learned the Qur‘ān, knowledge, and action all together.”

Is Memorisation Enough?

Sometimes, we only focus on making our children memorise the Qur‘ān or perfect their tajwīd, but we neglect to inspire and teach them the message and the meanings of the Qur‘ān. Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (raḥimahullāh) said, “Certainly, slaves and children recite the Qur‘ān and they have no knowledge of its meaning. They memorised its letters but neglected its commands, to the extent that one of them will say, “By Allah, I have recited the entire Qur‘ān without missing out on any letter.” By Allah, he has missed out on all of it! For there is no effect of the Qur‘ān on his character and actions. By Allah, it is not about memorising its letters, and then neglecting its commands!”

The number of companions who memorised the Qur‘ān was not high in number, yet they all lived and breathed the Qur‘ān. Their primary concern was to put into practice what they had learned. ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhu) said, “Memorising the words of the Qur‘ān is difficult for us, but acting upon it is easy for us. As for those who come after us, memorising the Qur‘ān will be easy for them, but acting upon it will be difficult for them.”
