Within just a few decades after the advent of the final Prophet sent to mankind ﷺ, the world witnessed one of history’s most remarkable transformations. A people once divided by tribal loyalties, trapped in cycles of violence, and largely unknown beyond the Arabian Peninsula became the architects of a civilisation that reshaped the world. They defeated the mighty Persian and Roman Empires, established justice across vast lands, and became leaders in knowledge and civilisation.

How did such an extraordinary transformation happen within a single generation? What changed impoverished desert Bedouins into men and women who carried a message that altered the course of history?

The answer lies in a miracle that still exists today: the Qur’ān.

Shaykh Muḥammad al-Ghazālī (raḥimahullāh) explained that the Qur’ān fundamentally reshaped the Arabs. By opening their hearts to its beauty, they became a unified people who consulted with each other, rejected tyranny, and upheld justice. Despite how entrenched their regressive practices were, the Qur’ān compelled them to abolish inequality, reject racism, and do away with arrogance.

Such was the transformation that a Bedouin like Ribʿī b. ʿĀmir (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhu) could stand dignified before a Persian commander and declare:

“We have come to take people from the worship of servants to the worship of Allah alone; from the narrowness of this world to the vastness of this world and the Hereafter; and from the injustice of other ways of life to the justice of Islam.”

The Three Pillars of Change

Shaykh Majdī Hilālī explains that this transformation rested on three pillars of Quranic tarbiyah:

The Qur’ān

The murabbī (the nurturer)

The environment

1. The Qur’an: The Manual for Transformation

The Qur’ān was the illuminating manual through which the Prophet ﷺ nurtured the finest generation, shaping hearts filled with strong īmān, deep love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ, and iḥsān (excellence).

This transformation, however, did not happen overnight.

The Qur’ān was revealed gradually over 23 years, allowing the Companions to understand, internalise, and embody its guidance.

The gradual revelation of the Qur’ān was central to its transformative power. As verses descended in direct response to real events unfolding around them, the Companions were able to internalise the practical lessons immediately. Battles such as Badr, Uḥud, and Aḥzāb, alongside the everyday challenges of community life, became classrooms in which revelation guided decisions, nurtured conviction, and strengthened īmān.

The Qur’ān was never an abstract text. It spoke directly into lived reality.

Dr Fārid al-Anṣārī (raḥimahullāh) explained that the Qur’ān served as a direct gateway to the Divine. For those who first heard it from the Prophet ﷺ, there was no doubt that Allah was addressing them personally and, as a result, every verse settled deeply within their hearts and was fully reflected in their actions.

When Abū Bakr and ʿUmar (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhumā) visited Umm Ayman (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhā) after the demise of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, she wept. When they asked her, “What makes you weep? What is with Allah is better for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ!” she replied, “I am not weeping because I do not know that what is with Allah is better for His Messenger ﷺ. Rather, I weep because the revelation has been cut off from the heavens.” Her words moved them to tears, and they wept alongside her (Muslim).

Their relationship with the Qur’ān, however, extended far beyond emotion. It shaped the very method by which they learned it and lived its teachings.

Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī said: “Those who used to teach us the Qur’ān — such as ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān and ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd — told us that when they learned ten verses from the Prophet ﷺ, they would not move on until they had understood the knowledge and actions contained within them. So we learned the Qur’ān, knowledge, and action together.”

2. The Murabbi: Rasulullah ﷺ as a Nurturer

Alongside the miracle of the Qur’ān, came the miracle of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Allah ﷻ decreed that the Qur’ān’s transformative power would be transmitted through a guide: a murabbī who nurtures hearts and minds. Allah ﷻ says,

“He it is Who sent among the unlettered ones a Messenger from among themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom, whereas before they had been in manifest error” (62:2).

The Prophet ﷺ, the best teacher humanity has known, lived among the Companions and connected their hearts to the Qur’ān. He instilled in his Companions a detachment from this world, purified their hearts, and corrected their understanding. He embodied the Qur’ān he conveyed and, in doing so, he nurtured a generation that carried this dīn across the world.

Imām al-Qarrāfī succinctly remarked that if the Prophet ﷺ had been given no miracle besides his Companions, they alone would be sufficient proof of his prophethood.

3. The Environment: Nurturing Hearts in Community

Alongside the Qur’ān and the murabbī, the Companions were shaped by the environment in which they were nurtured. In Makkah, the Prophet ﷺ gathered the believers in Dār al-Arqam, away from competing influences, where they learned together and formed the bonds of brotherhood that would later spread from East to West.

There, the curriculum was the Qur’ān itself: fresh revelation heard directly from the Messenger ﷺ, settling into hearts and reshaping souls.

The Prophet ﷺ ensured that the Qur’ān alone formed the foundation of education, unmixed with other influences. Its verses transformed their values, emotions, conduct, and aspirations. Each believer was rebuilt inwardly before being sent out to transform the world around them.

After the hijrah, this nurturing environment expanded to encompass the masjid and wider community of Madinah. Throughout this period, the Qur’ān remained the focal point, taught by the Prophet ﷺ for the transformation of the Muhājirīn and Anṣār.

In fact, the scholars say that Madinah was ‘conquered’ through the Qur’ān. Before the Prophet ﷺ migrated, he sent Muṣʿab ibn ʿUmayr (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhu) to Madinah with portions of the Qur’ān. Going from house to house, he called people to Islam by reciting the Qur’ān to them. Through the verses, the Anṣār’s hearts softened until Islam entered nearly every household in Madinah.

This happened because the Companions received the Qur’ān with sincerity, humility, and a readiness to act. They tasted its sweetness, recognised its power to change their hearts, and so they devoted themselves to it wholeheartedly. In return, the Qur’ān reshaped their hearts, guided their actions, and made them flag-bearers of Islam.

Moving Forward

Our task today is not to search for a new formula for revival. The blueprint already exists. If we aspire to nurture a generation guided by revelation and grounded in reality who carry forward the legacy of the Prophet ﷺ, we must restore the three pillars that formed the first generation: the Qur’ān as the curriculum, the murabbī as the nurturer, and a Qur’ān-centred environment in which īmān and character can flourish.

Reflect

How can we help our students experience the Qur’ān as living, transformative guidance, rather than simply a text to be recited or memorised?

As educators, are we merely instructors, or are we true murabbīs who nurture īmān, character, and action through the Qur’ān?

Does our educational environment cultivate īmān, brotherhood, and righteous character, as Dār al-Arqam and Madīnah did?
Raising children who love Islam is the goal of every Muslim parent and educator. However, our approach determines whether we cultivate deep-rooted īmān in children or create a fragile, superficial connection that withers under life’s challenges.

The critical difference lies in one fundamental principle: teaching children why they believe alongside instructing them how to practise. This distinction does not imply that every act of worship requires rationalisation. Rather, understanding the wisdom and purpose behind acts of worship cultivates an emotional attachment to Allah c and gives meaning to acts of worship.

When this is done correctly, obligations are transformed from habitual actions into meaningful acts of worship that nurture a sincere connection with the Creator c.

Dwindling Iman

Sadly, a worrying number of our youth are leaving Islam. Although the causes are complex and multifaceted, two educational factors require serious reflection:

A critical absence of meaning and purpose behind acts of worship.

When young people cannot connect with the deeper wisdom of our beautiful dīn, religious obligations begin to feel like burdensome chores. Acts of worship lose their spiritual essence and become mechanical movements devoid of heart and understanding.

At the same time, we are witnessing a growing wave of secular and philosophical ideologies that continue to shape modern thinking. Acts of worship are often viewed as irrational or non-beneficial because they do not produce immediate material gain and may appear disconnected from contemporary values. Young Muslims naturally search for meaning and purpose, yet many have never been exposed to the wisdoms of the sharīʿah. As a result, Islam can become reduced to a list of commands and prohibitions, creating a sense of restriction rather than liberation.

Islamic Revelation: A Model of ‘Why’ and ‘How’

The Prophetic mission itself provides us with the most profound blueprint for meaningful tarbiyah and education. For thirteen years in Makkah, the Prophet g focused primarily on cultivating īmān and establishing the foundations of aqīdah. Acts of worship and many legal rulings were made obligatory many years later.

This Divine sequence provides a clear educational principle: establish understanding and connection to Allah c before expecting implementation. The Qur’an first introduces humanity to Allah, the purpose of existence, and the reality of the Hereafter before detailing legal rulings and acts of worship.

Reflect upon the advice of Luqmān n to his son, as preserved in the Qur’ān. He begins with tawḥīd, gratitude, and awareness of Allah’s encompassing knowledge before addressing acts of worship and moral conduct. This progression teaches us that education begins with knowing Allah c and understanding our purpose in life. Once that foundation is established, acts of worship become meaningful pathways towards attaining that purpose.

Understanding Child Development

Interestingly, this Prophetic methodology aligns closely with what contemporary developmental psychology has discovered about how children learn and internalise values. Raising children who love Islam begins with the heart, long before it begins with rules.

While developmental psychology is a relatively recent scientific field in the West, Islamic scholars have long emphasised nurturing a child’s love for Allah before focusing on detailed legal rulings and obligations.

In the early stages of development, children possess a limited capacity for abstract reasoning and critical analysis. They primarily understand the world through the frameworks presented to them by trusted adults. As a result, values and beliefs are often internalised long before rules and regulations are fully understood.

For this reason, worship of Allah c should first be grounded in certainty of His existence, recognition of His greatness, and love for Him through learning His Names, Attributes, and blessings. When these foundations are explicitly cultivated, children develop an emotional attachment to worship itself. Their acts of worship begin to feel personally meaningful rather than externally imposed.

The Wisdoms of the Shariʿah

One of the most effective ways of teaching the ‘why’ with the ‘how’ is by introducing children to the wisdoms of the sharīʿah.

The rulings of Islam are not prescribed as arbitrary commands devoid of purpose. Rather, they are acts of Divine wisdom that bring benefit to individuals and societies in this life and the next. When children understand these wisdoms, they begin to appreciate worship as a gift from Allah rather than a burden.

Take the example of ṣalāh. While it may outwardly appear to be a series of physical movements and prescribed words, it carries profound spiritual, personal, and communal benefits:

1. The Constant Return to the Remembrance of the Creator

As we become immersed in the demands of daily life, ṣalāh repeatedly redirects our hearts towards our Creator and reminds us of the true purpose of our existence.

2. The Barrier to Committing Sins

Ṣalāh strengthens the īmān of a believer and acts as a deterrent against sin and transgression. Through reciting the words of Allah, glorifying Him, and standing before Him in humility, the believer develops a heightened awareness of Allah in everyday life.

3. Strengthening the Muslim Community

The congregational prayer strengthens bonds between Muslims and transforms the masjid into a centre of worship, learning, support, and brotherhood.

“Cooperate with one another in goodness and righteousness, and do not cooperate in sin and transgression.” (5:2)

When we teach children the ‘why’ of ṣalāh, we move beyond teaching physical movements and help them internalise its emotional, spiritual, and social dimensions. Worship becomes meaningful because its purpose is understood.

The concept of devoted worship to Allah, known as ʿubudiyyah, is essential for kids to learn alongside acts of worship. Check out Fiqh and ʿUbudiyyah books by Quranic Tarbiyah to see how we incorporate the ‘secrets’ (wisdoms) when teaching the pillars of Islam.

Quranic Tarbiyah: A Holistic Vision

The vision of the Quranic Tarbiyah curriculum is not merely to help children recite the Qur’an or learn its meanings. Rather, it seeks to nurture individuals who live by its guidance and embody its values.

By prioritising understanding alongside practice, young Muslims are equipped with spiritual depth, conviction, and purpose. They learn not only what Islam teaches, but why those teachings matter.

Both the ‘why’ and the ‘how’ are essential in Islamic education. By fusing both into what we teach our learners, we lay the foundations that, by the permission of Allah, can withstand doubts, challenges, and the complexities of modern life.

This is what raising children who love Islam truly requires: teaching the ‘why’ alongside the ‘how’. If we wish to nurture a generation that loves Allah, cherishes worship, and remains steadfast upon the dīn, then we must follow the Qur’anic pedagogy: by teaching the ‘why’ alongside the ‘how’.

Reflect

How often do I teach why we worship Allah, not just how to worship Him?

Which is more important to you: the ‘why’ or the ‘how’?

The news cycle in recent years will have left a believer aghast at the unending massacres, killings and atrocities inflicted upon this Ummah. Each calamity brings frustration, followed by a cycle of protests, khutbahs, articles, and lamentable discussions.

Important as these responses are, they are not sufficient on their own. Had they been enough, the Ummah would not remain trapped in recurring cycles of oppression. These repeated crises point to a deeper issue that requires long-term vision and strategic reform.

The Gradual Journey of Tarbiyah and Reform

The Qur’ān teaches us that true reform and victory is not achieved through a single effort or emotional reaction. It is a long and gradual journey requiring the preparation of ourselves and the next generation.

History repeatedly shows that victory is never a sudden miracle or a stroke of luck, but the result of a long spiritual, intellectual, and social preparation. Even the greatest moments of triumph were preceded by years, often decades, of inner reform i.e. tarbiyah (the nurturing of individuals). A concentrated effort must be directed toward this noble goal. Without it, the Ummah remains stagnant, trapped in cycles of grief and reaction.

With each new wound, our cries and pleas rise to Allah, our supplications intensify, and reminders echo from the pulpits calling for repentance and change. But once we’re out of the eye of the storm, the wound becomes part of the Ummah’s body and people grow accustomed to it until another calamity arrives.

True transformation begins with the revival of īmān within society: God-consciousness, compassion, modesty, cooperation in righteousness, selflessness, steadfast ṣabr, enjoining good, forbidding wrong, tawakkul, and a sense of responsibility toward the Ummah and humanity. At the same time, destructive traits such as self-admiration, selfishness, moral corruption, and attachment to worldly desires and prioritising nationalism, ethnicity, family loyalties, or political movements over the shared identity of the Ummah must be eliminated. These are the deeper causes of defeat, weakening the Ummah from within.

This transformation can only be achieved through sustained tarbiyah, carried out by those striving for Islam within their spheres of influence, preparing both themselves and the next generation for this long and gradual path of reform.

Comprehensive Tarbiyah

No matter how many lessons are delivered or articles written, they will not produce lasting benefit unless embedded within a comprehensive system of tarbiyah: a structured framework of development and reform. Such a system nurtures righteous believers who reform themselves and uplift others. Upon them rests the foundation of a righteous family, and upon that, a righteous society.

Thus, the starting point for lifting the calamities upon the Ummah lies in inner reform. Allah ﷻ says:

“Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves” (13:11).

Unless this transformation occurs, trials will continue to descend. They are not lifted by duʿāʾ alone, nor by mere aid to the afflicted, despite their importance. Real transformation demands effort, sacrifice, and commitment.

The Prophetic Path of Tarbiyah

The transformation of the Ummah requires a sound and holistic tarbiyah of its people. True tarbiyah demands consistency in living Islām within an environment of companionship and nurturing: one that revives the spirit, refines understanding, directs effort, and inspires aspiration.

This was precisely the method of our beloved Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ in building the Ummah. Reflect on Allah’s words to him:

“Keep yourself patient with those who call upon their Lord in the morning and the evening, seeking His Face; and let not your eyes pass beyond them, desiring the adornment of worldly life…” (18:28).

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ nurtured his Companions, constantly guiding and developing them, both in Makkah and Madīnah. In Makkah, he gathered with them regularly in the house of al-Arqam ibn Abī al-Arqam near al-Ṣafā. In Madinah, his tarbiyah continued through the masjid and through his constant presence among them. Allah ﷻ describes this mission: “It is He who has sent among the unlettered a Messenger from themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book and wisdom.” (62:2).

Learning From the Past

Our history provides many examples of a defeated Ummah rising again, stronger than before. We must look to these moments for guidance and seek to understand and relive the means through which Allah granted victory.

Ṣalāḥuddīn’s liberation of al-Quds is often remembered as a military triumph, but it was preceded by decades of spiritual and intellectual preparation. Most of his life was not spent on the battlefield, but on healing internal divisions, restoring unity, resolving divisions, and rebuilding a shared sense of purpose.

The road to Jerusalem was not only paved with battles against external enemies, but also with steadfastness in the face of betrayal and internal opposition. Yet Ṣalāḥuddīn (raḥimahullāh) understood that unity upon truth was a prerequisite for victory.

Before him, figures such as Nūruddīn Zengī revived religious life, established institutions of learning, and cultivated unity and purpose within society. Scholars like al-Ghazālī and al-Jīlānī emphasised sincerity, purification of the heart, and the alignment of knowledge with action. Thus, Ṣalāḥ ad-Dīn inherited not just an army, but a generation grounded in both spiritual and physical strength.

When people rose above petty disputes, prioritised the Hereafter over worldly gain, and united upon the truth of “Lā ilāha illa Allāh” in word and action, the extraordinary unfolded. In just ninety days, strongholds of oppression that had lasted ninety years began to collapse.

Similarly, the scattered Berber tribes of the Sahara, divided by internal rivalries and weakened faith, underwent transformational tarbiyah under the guidance of ʿAbdullah ibn Yasin. With a focus on īmān and character, these tribes were united into the Murābiṭūn, who later ruled large parts of North Africa.

A Mirror for Our Time

Today, we face the same reality. Many wait for a leader to rise and transform the Ummah, yet we have not prepared ourselves for the weight of that path. The issue is not a lack of numbers or resources, but a lack of sincerity, sacrifice, and unity upon the truth.

When hearts become consumed with internal conflicts, divisions, and worldly pursuits, the Ummah loses sight of its mission.

Our history teaches us that however bleak the condition of the Ummah may seem, it is neither unique nor irredeemable. Through a sustained and committed return to tarbiyah, the Ummah can rise once again. The question is not whether victory will come, but whether we are prepared to become the generation that builds rather than destroys, unites rather than divides, and lives by “Lā ilāha illa Allāh” in truth and action, so that the promise of Allah may be realised.

Bordered by Guinea and Liberia, Sierra Leone is a West African country blessed with natural beauty and rich resources, particularly diamonds and gold. Yet despite this wealth, poverty remains widespread: more than 60% of the population survives on less than $1.25 a day. Of its six million citizens, about three‑quarters identify as Muslim, though this number has declined over the decades due to ongoing Christian and Aḥmadiyyah missionary efforts.

The Challenge: An Eroding Muslim Identity

This decline in numbers reflects more than statistics. It points to deep challenges that have weakened Islamic identity across generations.

From Christian Schools to Christianity

“Most priests in Sierra Leone are sons of Muslims,” explains Bishop Paganelli, who arrived as a missionary in 2005 in Sierra Leone.

His explanation was simple: when the Xaverians arrived, they began establishing schools in the north, where almost none existed. Primary schools led to secondary schools, and evangelisation naturally followed through education.

For many families, schooling became the doorway to conversion. In communities with little access to learning, missionary institutions filled the gap, and over time, generations lost their īmān. Census data reveals a worrying decline: Muslims once made up 85 per cent of the population, later 75 per cent, and now less than 66 per cent.

Muslim by Name, Christian by Faith

This reality was evident during a 2019 visit to distribute aid to flood victims, when the Ummah Welfare Trust (UWT) team met many sisters with Muslim names who said that they were now Christians. They explained that in Sierra Leone, it is common for a woman to adopt her husband’s religion, and so entire families gradually drifted away from Islam, often without realising how far they had gone.

The Ahmaddiyah influence

Alongside the activities of Christian groups, the Aḥmadiyyah (Qādiyānī) groups have also increased their efforts to draw vulnerable Muslims away from their faith through various schemes. They claim a notable presence in the country, maintaining more than 500 places of worship, schools, and centres.

Due to limited knowledge and misleading claims, some locals mistakenly regard them as part of the Muslim community. Within their centres, their leaders present Mirzā Gulām Aḥmad Qādiyānī as a Caliph rather than openly as a Prophet, a strategy designed to broaden their appeal.

Although their preaching is not aggressive, their subtle programmes, particularly through their educational network, have enabled them to gain a degree of political and social legitimacy, which remains a matter of concern for the Muslim community.

Harshness Hurts Faith

The erosion of identity is not only due to external influences such as the missionary efforts. At times, the way Islam has been taught has itself driven people away.

One brother shared a painful story that explained why many with Muslim names no longer identified as such. His two aunts had left Islam for Christianity after being beaten by their Qur’an teacher as children. In contrast, when they turned to the church, they were embraced with affection and care.

Their experience was a sobering reminder: īmān cannot be nurtured through fear or harshness. Our approach to teaching Islam must reflect mercy and compassion.

A Dire Need for Authentic Knowledge

Alongside compassion, authentic knowledge is essential. Without it, sincere efforts can lead to mistaken practices.

In 2020, during a trip to Sierra Leone, the UWT team visited newly built masjids funded by generous donors (may Allah ﷻ accept their spending for His sake). They arrived at Masjid Ismaʿil in Bo for ʿAsr salah, only to find it closed. Locals explained that the prayer had already been performed, even though the time had not yet entered. The same practice was repeated for ʿIsha.

In response, a knowledgeable Imam was appointed to Masjid Ismaʿil. His role was not only to lead salah at the correct times, but also to teach and revive the community’s imān.

The Response: Quranic Tarbiyah

The community’s struggles revealed how desperately authentic knowledge and compassionate teaching were needed to nurture īmān and rebuild Muslim identity in Sierra Leone.

“I Love Madrasah (Maktab) More Than School”

Within months, more than thirty teachers were recruited across different regions, establishing madrasahs and halaqahs where children could be nurtured in a Prophetic manner. Families welcomed this effort with eagerness, and demand for classes grew rapidly.

As the team explored the available curriculum options, they found that there wasn’t a curriculum which focused on nurturing the īmān of the learners in an effective way, making Allah ﷻ the centre of the curriculum. Other curricula also placed little emphasis on helping learners connect with the Qur’an and understand its meanings in a clear, structured way.

This led to the team developing the Quranic Tarbiyah curriculum, designed to cultivate īmān while creating an engaging and enjoyable environment of learning.

By Allah’s grace, many children in Sierra Leone now learn through the Quranic Tarbiyah curriculum. Many students often express their joy, saying they now love madrasah more than school. All praise belongs to Allah alone.

A Nationwide Movement

What began as a local initiative soon grew into a nationwide effort. Alhamdulillah, today, over 50,000 students, including 3,000 adults, are studying the Quranic Tarbiyah curriculum across Sierra Leone.

Teachers receive weekly training and tarbiyah sessions focused on Prophetic methods of teaching. Every madrasah is monitored weekly to ensure consistency and quality. Students are provided with bags, uniforms, books, and stationery — everything they need to learn with dignity and enthusiasm.

Spreading the Khayr Beyond Borders

The challenge of people leaving Islam is not limited to Sierra Leone. Recognising this, the team launched quranictarbiyah.com, making the curriculum available for free download worldwide, with physical copies offered at a small cost.

We pray that Allah ash‑Shakūr accepts this humble effort, blesses it, forgives our shortcomings, and makes it a means of uplifting our Ummah.

The Qur‘ān is the eternal book of guidance. It is a light which illuminates the path of truth amidst the darknesses of falsehood. The Qur‘ān contains legal rulings for a human to live on Allah’s earth, as His subservient slaves. It is a book of blessings and eternal wisdom; a warner and a giver of good news. It is a cure for every disease – be it spiritual or physical.

The Qur‘ān was the manual that the Prophet ﷺ used to raise and nurture the best of generations — a generation characterised by unwavering imān, a deep love for Allah and His Messenger ﷺ and the pursuit of iḥsān. The Qur’ān transformed their hearts, minds, characters and their entire lives.

This did not happen overnight. In fact, the Qur‘ān was revealed over a period of 23 years to allow the companions to understand, internalise and shape their character according to it. Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī said: “Those who used to teach us the Qur‘ān — such as ʿUthmān b. ʿAffān and ʿAbdullah b. Masʿūd (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhum) etc — told us that when they learned ten verses from the Prophet ﷺ, they would not move on from them until they had learned the knowledge and actions contained within them.”

They said: “So we learned the Qur‘ān, knowledge, and action all together.”

Is Memorisation Enough?

Sometimes, we only focus on making our children memorise the Qur‘ān or perfect their tajwīd, but we neglect to inspire and teach them the message and the meanings of the Qur‘ān. Al-Ḥasan al-Baṣrī (raḥimahullāh) said, “Certainly, slaves and children recite the Qur‘ān and they have no knowledge of its meaning. They memorised its letters but neglected its commands, to the extent that one of them will say, “By Allah, I have recited the entire Qur‘ān without missing out on any letter.” By Allah, he has missed out on all of it! For there is no effect of the Qur‘ān on his character and actions. By Allah, it is not about memorising its letters, and then neglecting its commands!”

The number of companions who memorised the Qur‘ān was not high in number, yet they all lived and breathed the Qur‘ān. Their primary concern was to put into practice what they had learned. ʿAbdullāh b. Masʿūd (raḍiya Allahu ʿanhu) said, “Memorising the words of the Qur‘ān is difficult for us, but acting upon it is easy for us. As for those who come after us, memorising the Qur‘ān will be easy for them, but acting upon it will be difficult for them.”
